  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spoon or spatula
  • Knife and peeler

Ingredients

For the Apple Filling:

  • 6 cups apples sliced and peeled, tart varieties like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp
  • 1 cup granulated sugar to sweeten the apples
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice brightens flavors and prevents browning
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon signature spice of apple desserts
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg adds warmth and depth
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour thickens the apple filling

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour forms the base of the topping
  • 0.5 cup rolled oats adds chew and crunch
  • 0.5 cup packed brown sugar brings molasses notes to the topping
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking powder gives the topping a slight lift
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt balances sweetness and enhances flavor
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter melted, adds richness to the topping
  • 0.25 cup milk keeps the topping tender
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract rounds out the flavor bouquet

Instructions

Build Apple Cobbler Step by Step

  • Peel, core, and slice your apples into uniform pieces. Toss them in a large bowl with the granulated sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 1 tablespoon of flour. Set aside to marinate while preparing the topping.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir the dry ingredients evenly. Add melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract. Mix until just combined into a thick batter.
  • Spread the apple mixture evenly in your baking dish. Dollop spoonfuls of the topping batter across the apples, allowing some gaps for steam to escape.
  • Place the cobbler in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) and bake for 40-45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.
  • Let the cobbler cool for 10-15 minutes before serving to let the juices thicken. Serve warm, ideally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

  • Prepare the apple filling a day ahead and refrigerate for enhanced flavor.
  • Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for a more complex taste.
  • Substitute dairy with plant-based alternatives for a vegan version.
  • Ensure topping batter is not overmixed to maintain a tender texture.
  • Reheat leftovers gently to revive flavors without drying out.
