Ingredients
- 16 ounces ziti noodles
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound chicken breasts trimmed and cut into bite-size pieces
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 28 ounces pasta sauce store-bought or homemade
- 0.5 ounces fresh basil chopped (about ½ cup)
- 1 cup grated parmesan cheese divided into two ½-cup portions
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese divided into two 1-cup portions
Instructions
Step 1: Cook the Ziti - Begin by boiling a large pot of salted water. Add the ziti noodles and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
Step 2: Sauté the Chicken - In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the chicken pieces and cook until golden brown and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes. Add the minced garlic in the last minute of cooking to avoid burning it.
Step 3: Combine the Ingredients - In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked chicken, ziti noodles, pasta sauce, chopped basil, and ½ cup of grated parmesan cheese. Stir until everything is well coated.
Step 4: Layer the Dish - Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Transfer half of the pasta mixture into the baking dish. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese over the top. Add the remaining pasta mixture and top with the remaining mozzarella and parmesan cheese.
Step 5: Bake - Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy - Let the baked ziti rest for about 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with additional fresh basil if desired, and enjoy this comforting meal with your loved ones!
- Swap chicken for ground turkey or a plant-based protein for a different flavor.
- Use whole wheat ziti for added nutrition and fiber.
- Make it lighter by reducing cheese or using low-fat alternatives.
