- 1 cup buttermilk warmed to 90°F
- 1 pack instant active yeast (0.25 oz or 2 tsp)
- 1/2 cup salted butter very soft or somewhat melted
- 1/3 cup white sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs
- 4 cups all-purpose flour more as needed
- 1/2 cup salted butter very soft, for filling
- 1 1/4 cups brown sugar
- 2 tbsp cinnamon
- 5 tbsp salted butter softened, for frosting
- 4 oz cream cheese
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
Prepare the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine the warmed buttermilk and instant yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Add the softened butter, white sugar, salt, and eggs to the yeast mixture. Mix well until combined.
Gradually add the all-purpose flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, about 1-2 hours.
Prepare the Filling
While the dough is rising, mix the softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl until well combined.
Shape the Rolls
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a floured surface. Roll it out into a large rectangle about 1/4-inch thick.
Evenly spread the cinnamon filling over the rolled-out dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
Starting from one long edge, carefully roll the dough into a tight log. Cut the log into 12 equal pieces.
Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, cover them, and let them rise again until puffy, about 30-45 minutes.
Bake and Frost
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the tops of the rolls with heavy cream or whole milk and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
Prepare the frosting by beating together the softened butter, cream cheese, vanilla extract, and powdered sugar until smooth.
Once the rolls are out of the oven, let them cool slightly before spreading the cream cheese frosting on top.
- Ensure your buttermilk is warmed to the correct temperature before adding the yeast for best results.
- If the dough feels too sticky while rolling, sprinkle more flour on your surface.
- These rolls are best enjoyed fresh, but can be reheated in the microwave to regain their soft texture.
