- 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
- 1 cup Whole milk
- 1.5 cups Shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- ¼ teaspoon Salt
- ¼ teaspoon Black pepper
Gather all your ingredients. Measure out the butter, flour, milk, shredded cheese, salt, and black pepper. It’s always best to have everything ready before you start cooking!
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Once melted, sprinkle in 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour. Using your whisk, stir continuously for about 1-2 minutes until the mixture turns a light golden color.
Slowly pour in 1 cup of whole milk while whisking constantly. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens and starts to bubble, which should take around 3-5 minutes.
Once your sauce has thickened, remove it from the heat and stir in 1 ½ cups of shredded sharp cheddar cheese. Keep stirring until the cheese has completely melted and the sauce is smooth.
Add ¼ teaspoon of salt and ¼ teaspoon of black pepper to the sauce. Adjust the seasoning according to your preferences, tasting as you go.
Your Cheese Sauce Recipe is ready to be poured over your favorite dishes or used as a dip. Enjoy the creamy goodness!
- Don’t let the butter brown; you want it just melted for the roux.
- Whisk continuously when adding the milk to prevent lumps.
- Use freshly shredded cheese instead of pre-shredded for the best meltability.
- Adjust your heat to low when adding cheese to prevent it from becoming grainy.
