Equipment

  • Bundt pan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Electric mixer or hand whisk
  • Heatproof bowl
  • Cooling rack

Ingredients

Cake Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 orange zest of 1 orange
  • 1 cup boiling water

Ganache Ingredients

  • 0.5 cup heavy cream
  • 8 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chopped
  • 1 tablespoon orange juice

Instructions

Cake Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease your bundt pan with butter or non-stick spray, then dust lightly with flour and tap out the excess.
  • In a large bowl, sift together all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt for even distribution.
  • In another bowl, whisk eggs and granulated sugar until smooth and slightly thickened. Add vegetable oil, buttermilk, vanilla extract, and orange zest; mix to combine.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring gently until just combined. Pour in boiling water slowly while stirring to intensify chocolate flavor and achieve moist texture.
  • Pour batter evenly into the prepared bundt pan. Bake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Ganache Preparation

  • Heat heavy cream in a small saucepan over medium heat until it begins to simmer. Remove from heat and pour over chopped semi-sweet chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Let sit for 2-3 minutes, then stir gently until smooth and glossy. Stir in orange juice.
  • Once the cake is completely cool, drizzle the ganache over the top, allowing it to drip down the sides. Garnish with extra orange zest or chocolate shavings if desired.

Notes

  • Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for smooth blending.
  • Don't skip adding boiling water; it creates a moist crumb and deep chocolate flavor.
  • Be gentle when mixing the batter to keep the cake tender and avoid density.
  • To maintain a shiny ganache, stir gently after combining cream and chocolate and let it sit before stirring.
  • Add extra orange zest for a brighter citrus flavor if desired.
