For the Bagels:
- 2 cups warm water
- 1 ½ tablespoons active dry yeast
- 2 ½ teaspoons packed light brown sugar
- 4 ⅔ cups bread flour (plus extra, if needed)
- 1 ¾ teaspoons salt
- 1 large egg white
- 1 tablespoon water (to mix with egg white for egg wash)
- 1 ½ tablespoons everything bagel seasoning
Step-by-Step Instructions:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, active dry yeast, and brown sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Once the yeast is activated, add the bread flour and salt to the mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl, covering it with a clean kitchen towel. Allow it to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
Once your dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape them into bagels.
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Boil the bagels for 1-2 minutes on each side. Remove with a slotted spoon.
Brush the boiled bagels with the egg wash and sprinkle with everything bagel seasoning.
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and bake the bagels for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
Allow the bagels to cool on a wire rack before serving.
- For extra flavor, add garlic or onion powder to the dough.
- Keep dough covered while shaping to prevent drying out.
- Experiment with different toppings and herbs!
- Boiling is crucial for achieving the bagel's chewy texture.
