Homemade Apple Butter

Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients

  • 4 pounds apples Use a mix of sweet and tart varieties.
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup maple syrup or brown or granulated sugar Adjust sweetness to taste.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Optional.
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Optional.
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves Optional.
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions
 

  • Step 1: Wash the apples thoroughly, core and chop them into quarters.
  • Step 2: In a large stockpot, combine the chopped apples and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Step 3: Use an immersion blender to puree the mixture until smooth.
  • Step 4: Add sweetener, cinnamon, vanilla, cloves, and salt. Stir to combine.
  • Step 5: Cook uncovered over low heat for 1 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally until thickened.
  • Step 6: Store in sterilized jars once cooled.

Notes

Store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks or can for long-term storage.
