Cuisine Italian
- 1.5 cups warm water
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon instant or rapid rise yeast
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 tablespoons butter, melted (divided)
- 0.5 teaspoon sea salt for sprinkling on top, to taste
- 0.25 teaspoon garlic powder adds flavor
In a mixing bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Stir until dissolved, then sprinkle the yeast over the top and let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
Add the softened butter and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in the all-purpose flour one cup at a time until a soft dough forms.
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add more flour if the dough is too sticky.
Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, until doubled in size.
Punch down the risen dough, divide into 10-12 pieces, and roll each into a long strip (7-8 inches). Place on a greased baking sheet.
Cover with a towel and let rise for another 30 minutes to puff up.
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
Bake the breadsticks for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with sea salt and garlic powder to taste immediately after baking.
- For extra flavor, add dried Italian herbs to the dough.
- Mix in grated Parmesan for a cheesy version.
- To keep them soft, brush generously with melted butter after baking.
