Equipment

  • Cutting Board
  • Sharp Knife
  • Bowl
  • Whisk or fork
  • Shallow dish or zip-top bag

Ingredients

For the Tofu:

  • 14-16 ounces extra or super-firm tofu pressed and cut into desired shapes
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons low sodium tamari or soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika

Instructions

Preparation Steps:

  • Start by pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Wrap the tofu block in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object on top for at least 15-20 minutes. This will help the tofu absorb the marinade better.
  • In a bowl, combine the olive oil, low sodium tamari or soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, maple syrup, liquid smoke, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. Whisk everything together until well combined.
  • Once the tofu is pressed, cut it into cubes, slices, or any shape you prefer. The size will depend on how you plan to use the tofu.
  • Place the cut tofu in the shallow dish or zip-top bag. Pour the marinade over the tofu, ensuring all pieces are well coated. If using a dish, cover it with plastic wrap; if using a bag, seal it tightly. Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight for a more intense flavor.
  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange the marinated tofu pieces in a single layer on the baking sheet. Bake for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the tofu is golden and slightly crispy.
  • Remove the tofu from the oven and let it cool slightly. Serve it warm in salads, grain bowls, or as a main dish alongside your favorite sides. Enjoy the delightful smoky flavor!

Notes

  • Press the tofu well to enhance texture and flavor absorption.
  • Experiment with different marinades for a unique twist.
  • Store leftover marinated tofu in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
