The Best Irish Soda Bread

For the Bread:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 and 3/4 cups buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 whole egg
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, kosher salt, baking soda, and granulated sugar until well combined.
Step 3: In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, melted butter, and egg until smooth.
Step 4: Pour the wet mixture into the bowl of dry ingredients and gently mix until just combined.
Step 5: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and shape it into a round loaf.
Step 6: Score the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
Step 7: Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
Step 8: Cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing.
- Store in a bread box or wrapped in a kitchen towel for up to 2 days.
- Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to a week.
- For longer storage, freeze slices in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
