For the Marinara Sauce:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil for sautéing
- 1 small yellow onion diced
- 2 15-ounce cans stewed tomatoes
- 1 6-ounce can tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
- ½ cup chicken broth or water to adjust consistency
Cooking Instructions:
In a large saucepan, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced yellow onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until translucent.
Add 3 cloves of minced garlic to the pan and stir for about 1 minute until fragrant. Avoid burning the garlic!
Pour in the 2 cans of stewed tomatoes and the 6-ounce can of tomato paste. Stir to combine.
Add 1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning, 1 teaspoon of salt, ½ teaspoon of black pepper, and 2 teaspoons of granulated sugar. Stir to incorporate.
Pour in ½ cup of chicken broth or water and stir until well combined.
Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Reduce heat to low, cover, and let cook for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as needed. If desired, use an immersion blender for a smoother sauce.
- Freeze leftovers in airtight containers for up to 3 months.
- Fresh tomatoes can be substituted for canned, but will require peeling and chopping.
- Add red pepper flakes for a spicy kick!
