  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Oil for frying neutral oil with a high smoke point

  • Step 1: Soak the Onions - Start by slicing your onions thinly. Place them in a large mixing bowl and cover them with buttermilk. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes.
  • Step 2: Prepare the Coating - In another bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
  • Step 3: Heat the Oil - In a deep frying pan or pot, heat about 2 inches of oil over medium-high heat.
  • Step 4: Coat the Onions - Remove the soaked onions from the buttermilk, dredge in the flour mixture, and shake off excess flour.
  • Step 5: Fry the Onions - Carefully place a handful of coated onions into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Step 6: Drain and Cool - Remove the crispy onion strings from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels.
  • Step 7: Serve and Enjoy - Serve warm as a snack or topping for burgers and salads.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, double-dip the onions in the flour mixture.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat in a preheated oven at 350°F for 10 minutes to restore crispiness.
